Breaking Barriers: At-Home Cervical Cancer Screening Research for Our Community
At Cerebral Palsy Positive, we know that for many in our community, a “routine” doctor’s visit is anything but routine. When you live with a physical disability, the barriers to care aren’t just metaphorical—they are physical. They are inaccessible exam tables, transportation hurdles, and clinical environments that weren’t designed with our bodies in mind.
We believe that healthcare should be a bridge, not a barrier. That is why we are proud to highlight a new research study from Michigan Medicine that explores a more inclusive way forward: at-home cervical cancer screening.
Why This Research Matters
Preventative care, like cervical cancer screening, is a cornerstone of health. However, Black and Indigenous women with physical disabilities often face systemic and physical challenges that make getting these screenings at a doctor’s office difficult.
This study seeks to change that by evaluating the practicality and effectiveness of at-home self-sampling tools. By moving the screening from the clinic to the home, we can help dismantle the barriers to life-saving care.
